MLK Day: MommyJacking Edition
Sometimes submissions feel like inauthentic props, like someone is paying Darlene and Patricia over at central casting to play the role of “mommyjackers” for the day on Facebook. It’ll come out later that they’re actually working for a bleach brand or something. Perhaps in the future, that’s how we’ll be marketed to? Anyway, I still felt the need to post this submission because A) it has to do with MLK Day, B) it’s a classic mommyjacking, and C) I actually received it from TWO readers (both BzzAgent fans, no doubt), so it just seemed like the right thing to do.
That said, it’s almost trite at this point for people to mommyjack holidays (otherwise known as holidayjacking). Yes, BzzAgent asked if people had the day off as a way to incite discussion, but not that kind of discussion. Not the kind that begins with, “I wish!” and ends with, “I’M A MOM!” That’s like if the Reverend Dr. King, Jr. was asked, “Hey, Dr. King, when’s your next day off?” and he replied, “I never get a day off! I’M A CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER! AND A DAD!” I mean, we get it: Parents have responsibilities around the clock. When you’re responsible for another life form, that’s kind of the deal. But at least follow up the mommyjacking with something like, “I’ll be spending the day teaching little Nevaeh about Dr. King’s wonderful message of peace and racial equality!” Make it relevant. Fake it if you have to!
